french macaroons cooking class ~ with joelen tan of what’s cookin’ chicago?

A few weekends ago Katelyn and R went to a French Macaroon making class on a lovely Saturday morning. And because I have been so preoccupied with work and such, I am just getting around to blogging about it now! The class was taught by Joelen Tan of What’s Cookin’ Chicago and it was lovely. She was an awesome teacher and her instruction was fun and informative. If anyone has tried to make macaroons before, you know that it is a lengthy process since they can be finicky pastries. I highly recommend checking out one of Joelen’s other classes, which you can sign up for on DabbleIMG_9200

The What’s Cookin’ Chicago spot is at Enerspace Chicago. It’s a huge co-working space where Joelen has a huge kitchen.

Joelen measured ingredients for us ahead of time. She also sifted the sugar and almond flour, which is necessary for macaroons. IMG_0294

My whipped egg whites. I’ve never done this before… kind of fun!

IMG_9995I went for the violet macaroons. IMG_6546

Mix it all together!IMG_9939

Add to piping bag. IMG_3424Pipe onto cookie sheet. So cute! They took sort of a long time to make… mine had to keep going back in the oven! Katelyn went for the pink ones.

Did we mention this class was BYOB? We were the only ones drinking… Oops.IMG_7152

After they were done baking, we got to add frosting for the center of the macaroons.IMG_5657
