summer hair ~ the up-do

Summer heat can be the worst for your hair. Frizzy hair is never fun, and when it gets hot, all we want to do it grab our hair and get it as far away from our necks as possible. Instead of making a messy, impromptu bun while you’re out and hoping for the best, try one of these cute celeb-inspired up-dos and wear your hair with confidence all night!

a very braid-y friday

We had a reeeeally productive Friday morning at work today and played around with different kinds of braids! (modeled by KDP & named by MMM aka the floozy with the sunhat & martini at the bottom)

1.  French ‘n Center

Grab 3 strands just in front of the crown of your head. Begin braiding like a standard three section braid adding hair to each section along the way until at nape of neck. Finish off with a standard three section braid. Use an elastic at the end.

2.  Headband Heroin

Braid one small braid on each side of head, wrap to opposite side across head and pin in place covering bobby pin with hair that is down.

3.  Scaley Chic

Pull hair to side of head, split into two section (one in each hand), grab a piece from the outside of section of the left hand and cross it to the right section, then cross an outside piece from the right section to the left hand/section. Continue repeating. Use an elastic at the end.

4.  Braid me Beautiful

Begin by making 2 French ‘n Center braids on each side of your head. Once each braid reaches the nape of your neck combine them and make one standard three section braid down the center. Use an elastic at the end.

5.  Katniss Everdeen

Do a dramatic part on one side of your head. Begin doing a French ‘n Center on the side of your head. Be sure to pull tight so the braid stays in place. Work your way at a diagonal across the back of your head. As you cross the nape of your neck, switch to just a standard 3 strand braid to finish it off.   Use an elastic at the end.

6.  Work to Play

Follow steps from Katniss Everdeen, then wrap the three strand braid portion into a bun at the nape of your neck. Pin to hold into place.

how-to: the perfect ballerina bun

A ballerina bun is not only super stylish and in right now, but it’s also one of the easiest and fastest hairstyles to create. Follow along this tutorial to pull it off perfectly every time!

We used a pre-made mesh circle from H&M ($5 in the impulse accessory bin by the registers) but you can also use a sock (learn how here).

Start with straight, sleek hair.

Pull hair into a high ponytail.

Grab the mesh circle and pull the ponytail through the center.

Pull the ponytail straight up and bring the mesh circle towards the end.

Fold the ends over and around the mesh circle, covering all parts and rolling the circle back down.

Keep rolling the hair and circle down towards your head, making sure to get all the ends in the bun.

Use bobby pins to secure any flyaway ends.

And there ya go! Easy, fast, looks great every time.
