Hair dos and don’ts of this weekend

samanthasquared

As a hair stylist and makeup artist myself I feel like hair can either make or break your whole look. Here are some of the best and worst styles I saw this weekend.

For the best up do of the weekend I chose Demi Lovato at the 2012 Fox Fall Eco Casino Part on September 10. I thought her smooth ballerina bun really pulled her whole outfit together. It was nice to see her go with a more natural beauty look.

And now for the worst up do of the weekend. Kelly Osbourne at Fashion Week New York all though she looked beautiful.Kelly’s braided top knot was a little too Dr. Suess Who like especially with her hot pink skirt and mustard yellow and neon orange top.

abby abby abby ~ style & trend profile

Abby, 23, Lincoln Park, Chicago

What is your favorite fashion trend right now and why?

Lace and crochet! They’re so cute ~ you can dress them up or down, and they’re both really flirty. They’re appropriate for day and night, which is huge for me because I often go straight out after work.

What is your favorite outfit to wear on a date?

A cute comfy dress! It’s a simple look with just the right amount of sex appeal!

What is your go-to hairstyle?

I like it curled ~ Kim K style.

What hair trend do you really want to try or learn how to do?

Ballerina buns! I’d love to be able to pull off the sock bun. It’s perfect for a hot day and gives you extra exposure to the sun!

What music artist/ band do you have on repeat right now?

The Nicki Minaj Pandora station is my go-to, however my guilty pleasure right now is Carly Rae.

What celeb’s style do you admire most?

Kate Hudson. She’s simple, sexy, and just always glamorous.

Do you have a daily accessory that you always wear?

My turquoise ring that I got at a Mexican flea market ~ I never take it off!

I also take my Kate Spade sunglasses everywhere during the day!

What is your daily makeup routine?

I swear by Estee Lauder. I use their foundation, bronzer, & eyeliner every day with some Sumptuous extra-black mascara.

How do you jazz it up for a nighttime look?

I’ll use some sparkly eyeshadow to play up my eyes. I always pick neutral shades so it doesn’t look costume-y, but with just enough sparkle for a fun night out!

How do you accessorize on nights out?

Wedges and statement jewelry.

I always buy my jewelry at Francesca’s, shoes always at T.J.Maxx!

sidenote ~ Abby is the biggest Maxxinista! Seriously, the girl finds the cutest stuff there.

What is your favorite Chicago restaurant and what is your favorite meal from there?

Sushi Para on Clark! There’s nothing better than a BYOB sushi dinner with friends. I’m a big sushi person, so I love when our friends get a few different rolls for the table and sample everybody’s.

Looking to the fall, what fall trend are you most excited about?

I cannot wait to buy a new pair of Frye boots. I’ve had my other Fryes for two years and I seriously don’t take them off my feet.

Fall is all about layers. What’s your solution for dressing up for a chilly night out?

Black jeggings with boots, a white cami, & my favorite Lucky off-white sweater. It’s got a vintage destroyed look to it, so it’s edgy but super comfy at the same time.

Summer style or fall style?

I’m so excited for fall clothes, but a tear is coming to my eye thinking about tossing the string bikini to the back of the closet!

how-to: the perfect ballerina bun

A ballerina bun is not only super stylish and in right now, but it’s also one of the easiest and fastest hairstyles to create. Follow along this tutorial to pull it off perfectly every time!

We used a pre-made mesh circle from H&M ($5 in the impulse accessory bin by the registers) but you can also use a sock (learn how here).

Start with straight, sleek hair.

Pull hair into a high ponytail.

Grab the mesh circle and pull the ponytail through the center.

Pull the ponytail straight up and bring the mesh circle towards the end.

Fold the ends over and around the mesh circle, covering all parts and rolling the circle back down.

Keep rolling the hair and circle down towards your head, making sure to get all the ends in the bun.

Use bobby pins to secure any flyaway ends.

And there ya go! Easy, fast, looks great every time.
